Moment thug driving stolen car hits the kerb and flies into the air

This is the moment a thug’s attempt to evade police came to an abrupt halt when he smashed a stolen vehicle into a kerb while trying to turn off a dual carriageway.

Ben Marchant, 21, led officers on a chase at speeds of 100mph along the A303 in Wiltshire during the early hours of April 21.

It came after he stole a Vauxhall Insignia in nearby Ludgershall, which officers tracked down to the busy road’s eastbound carriageway.

But when the Southampton resident spotted a police car on his tail, he sped away, with dashcam footage showing him dangerously swerving in and out of traffic.

The motorist then slams on his brakes before trying to make a swift exit at the junction for Barton Stacey, where he crashes into a kerb and sends the vehicle flying into the air.

The car eventually bounces to a halt on a grass verge, with officers quickly slamming their brakes on and arresting Marchant at the scene.

As a policewoman cuffs the criminal on the floor, blaring rap music can be heard playing from his car.

Marchant was later charged with failing to stop, dangerous driving, theft of a vehicle and possession of a Class B drug.

He was last month sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment, disqualified from driving for five years and ordered to pay a £228 fine.

Speaking after the sentence was passed down, PC Tom Webster from Wiltshire Police’s Roads Policing Unit described the footage as ‘shocking’.

He said: ‘During the pursuit, Marchant drove well in excess of 100mph, putting himself and other road users at risk of injury or worse.

‘He was unable to control the vehicle at such speed and as he attempted to leave the A303, he crashed into a hedgerow on the slip road.

‘The footage is really quite shocking and makes you wonder how nobody was seriously injured.

‘Drivers like Marchant who show a total disregard for others should be dealt with robustly and I am pleased that a custodial sentence and lengthy disqualification has been given.’
