Michael Owen changes his mind on Man City’s Premier League title chances

According to Metro on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, former Liverpool forward Michael Owen has revised his view of Manchester City’s Premier League title chances after being impressed by the team under Enzo Maresca.

Owen had initially questioned whether City could contend for the title after Pep Guardiola left and several key players, including Rodri, Bernardo Silva and John Stones, departed.

But City’s flawless start to the season and their emphatic 3–0 win over Liverpool at Anfield have led Owen to rethink his forecast. Speaking to Metro, he said he had expected City to face difficulties, especially with Arsenal appearing well placed to retain the title.

“I’ve been really impressed with them. I did have my doubts pre-season, absolutely,” Owen said.

Although Owen still regards Arsenal as the side to beat, he now believes City have shown they can challenge Mikel Arteta’s team for the Premier League crown.

He also commended City’s appointment of Maresca, noting that the manager’s previous time at the club may have helped preserve continuity after Guardiola’s departure. Maresca’s knowledge of the club, its players and its playing style seems to have made the transition smoother, as City continue to perform strongly.

Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has gone further, naming City as his title favourites after their victory over Liverpool. He pointed to the team’s quality and depth as reasons for his change of prediction, saying City have the resources to finish above Arsenal this season.
