COMMENTSLuke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo are both absent for Manchester United’s Champions League showdown with Atletico Madrid.

Shaw and Mainoo started for Man Utd in the 1-1 draw at home to Tottenham at the weekend, but their involvement in the Spanish capital was placed into serious doubt.

As the United squad were put through their paces at Carrington on Monday morning, neither player took part in the training session.

Shaw was substituted in stoppage-time against Spurs and later spotted limping as he made his Old Trafford exit, while Mainoo completed the full 90 minutes.

Michael Carrick provided an update on the pair in the news conference later on Monday, confirming the the double fitness blow.

“They’ve not travelled, they both picked up issues in the game on Saturday [against Spurs] and we were working through that, to see what that looks like,” he said.

“At the moment, they are not ready for the game tomorrow.”

Luke Shaw will miss out for Manchester United in SpainGettyAs Shaw will be forced to miss a second Champions League match in succession, it left the United head coach with a selection dilemma at left-back with Patrick Dorgu and Noussair Mazraoui also sidelined.

Diogo Dalot comes in at right-back, while Ayden Heaven partners Leny Yoro in the middle with Lisandro Martinez at left-back.

Senne Lammens is in net, and Carlos Baleba profits from Mainoo’s absence and partners Youri Tielemans. Andrey Santos gets a rare start to complete the midfield trio, behind the attacking three of Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes and Bryan Mbeumo.

Man Utd XI: Lammens; Dalot, Yoro, Martinez, Heaven; Tielemans, Baleba, Santos; Fernandes, Rashford; Mbeumo

Subs: Darlow, Mee, Amass, Armer, De Ligt, Maguire, Mount, Fletcher, Lacey, Amad, Cunha, Zirkzee

Injured: Ugarte, Dorgu, Sesko, Mazraoui, Heaton, Shaw, Mainoo
