Man Utd Regret €170m Summer Spend After Worst Start in 40 Years
According to a report by footballTransfers on Tuesday October 13, 2026, Manchester United’s poor start to the 2026/27 season has reportedly left club executives questioning their summer recruitment. Despite spending more than €170 million, the squad still appears short in key areas.
Michael Carrick’s side have collected just six points from six Premier League matches, recording only one win.
Their campaign has included defeats to Hull City and a 10-man Manchester City, as well as a Carabao Cup collapse after leading Brighton 2-0 at home.
United’s latest setback was a late equaliser conceded against bottom-placed Tottenham, who were also down to 10 men. According to The Sun, club officials have privately acknowledged that the transfer window fell short of expectations.
Midfield was a priority, but United missed out on several preferred targets. Carlos Baleba was reportedly the main signing the club viewed as a top option, while Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans were lower down the list.
Neither has made a major impact so far. Santos, in particular, has seen little action, playing just 83 minutes in the league and remaining an unused substitute in three straight matches.
The failed pursuit of Ederson may prove more costly. United withdrew from a reported €45 million deal after medical checks raised concerns about the Brazilian’s knee.
Rather than revisit the fee, the club moved on. Ederson has since signed a new contract with Atalanta and started every match this season as captain.
United also failed to strengthen at left-back. They explored moves for Lewis Hall, Alejandro Balde and Rayan Aït-Nouri, but none materialised.
Luke Shaw has already missed several matches and training sessions, leaving Carrick short of natural options.
Patrick Dorgu and Noussair Mazraoui have been used in the position, though Dorgu is currently injured and has primarily played as a winger.
With results worsening and several signings yet to make an impression, frustration has grown among supporters. After Saturday’s draw, boos were directed at Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the club’s leadership as well as the team’s performances.
