A man has died after falling unwell while in custody at a central London police station.

The 42-year-old man was found unresponsive in his cell at Charing Cross police station’s custody suite at 4.27am on October 2.

Officers carrying out cell checks entered the cell, began first aid, and called the London Ambulance Service.

Officers found the man unresponsiveGettyHe was then transported to hospital where he sadly died on October 11.

The Met Police said an investigation has now been launched by the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

The man was being held in police custody after being arrested on October 1 for recall to prison.

The Met Police said a risk assessment was carried out to identify any medical or other issues after he arrived in custody – as per police protocol.

The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards has also been made aware.

Charing Cross police station was the subject of a BBC Panorama documentary last yearGettyCommander Lou Sargent said: “Our thoughts and condolences are with the man’s family and friends at this difficult time.

“As is standard procedure, the full circumstances surrounding his death will now be independently examined, and we will provide our fullest support to the IOPC investigation.”

Charing Cross police station has been under scrutiny in recent years after a BBC Panorama investigation revealed a hidden culture of misogyny and racism among officers.

Since the documentary was released in October 2025, 13 officers from the police station have been sacked.
