Mahama directs GH¢300m allocation for 250 new police apartments
President John Dramani Mahama has directed Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson to make provision for GH¢300 million in the 2027 Budget to construct 250 apartments for police officers.
The proposed housing project is aimed at reducing overcrowding in police barracks and improving the living conditions of personnel.
President Mahama was speaking at the commissioning of an ultra-modern 85-bed ward complex at the Ghana Police Hospital on Tuesday, October 13.
He said the investment in accommodation would complement other measures to improve the welfare and operational effectiveness of the Ghana Police Service.
“I’ve requested the Minister of Finance to provide GH¢300 million in the 2027 budget to construct 250 new apartments for the police to ease congestion in some of your barracks,” he said.
Beyond the housing initiative, the President announced plans to strengthen the Service’s operational capacity through additional armoured vehicles and protective equipment.
He said a second batch of 40 armoured vehicles was expected to arrive in the coming weeks, following the delivery of 50 vehicles to the Police Service in December 2025.
President Mahama also disclosed that the government was procuring additional body armour to enhance the safety of officers deployed on operational duties.
He said the interventions, alongside improvements to police healthcare infrastructure, formed part of efforts to ensure personnel had better living conditions, adequate protection and the necessary resources to carry out their responsibilities effectively.
