Chief of the Defence Forces General Charles Kahariri on Tuesday presided over the final full-dress rehearsal for this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations, as Eldoret prepares to host the national event on October 20.

Kahariri, accompanied by Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, witnessed military and security services march-past parades and aerial displays by Kenya Air Force helicopters during the rehearsal at Kipchoge Keino Stadium.

The 9th Battalion, Kenya Rifles (9 KR), based in Eldoret, is expected to participate in the military parade.

The exercise brought together personnel from the military and other security agencies to fine-tune the ceremonial programme ahead of the national celebrations, which will be held in Eldoret for the first time.

President William Ruto will lead the nation in observing the day, which honours national heroes and heroines who fought for independence and contributed to nation-building.

Inspector General Douglas Kanja was absent from the rehearsal as he was out of the country on official duties. He was represented at the event.

The final rehearsal marks a key milestone in preparations for the October 20 celebrations, with security agencies coordinating their roles ahead of the event.

This year’s celebrations will be held under the theme of security, sports and the economy, highlighting their contribution to national development.

Meanwhile, the Mashujaa Day Thematic Week is underway in Eldoret, with an exhibition at Eldoret National Polytechnic running from October 13 to 18.

The exhibition showcases the contribution of security, sports and the economy to Kenya’s development, giving visitors an opportunity to learn about initiatives and achievements in the three sectors.

Omollo is leading the security delegation at the exhibition, alongside Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat of the Kenya Police Service and his Administration Police Service counterpart, Gilbert Masengeli.

Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Chelilim was also present.

The thematic week forms part of the build-up to the national celebrations, bringing together national leaders, security agencies, athletes and members of the public.

Eldoret’s selection as host city places the North Rift region at the centre of this year’s national festivities, with preparations extending beyond the stadium to exhibitions and other activities showcasing the region and its contribution to the country.

Kipchoge Keino Stadium, the main venue for the celebrations, has been undergoing upgrades to meet the requirements for hosting the national event.

The preparations come as the government works towards delivering a ceremony that combines military tradition, national pride and recognition of Kenyans who have made outstanding contributions to the country.

Mashujaa Day is observed annually on October 20 to honour individuals who have contributed to Kenya’s independence, development and progress.

This year’s celebrations are being co-hosted by Uasin Gishu, Nandi and Elgeyo Marakwet counties.

The event will bring the national celebrations to Uasin Gishu County, giving the three counties an opportunity to showcase their sporting heritage and the wider region’s role in the country’s economic and social development.
