The Democ TOP DOG: DA Western Cape leader Tertuis Simmers has accused the PA of allegedly giving tik to young voters during George by-elections.

PATRIOTIC ALLIANCE (PA) leader Gayton McKenzie has vowed to take DA Western Cape leader Tertuis Simmers to court over claims that voters were allegedly given tik to vote for the PA during George by-elections.

McKenzie launched a furious attack on Simmers on Facebook on Tuesday morning, accusing him of insulting coloured voters by suggesting they were bribed with drugs to secure the party’s victories.

The PA won three consecutive by-elections in George earlier this year, taking Ward 17 in Conville and Rosemoor and Ward 27 in Pacaltsdorp on 21 January, before winning Ward 16 on 11 February.

Simmers made the allegations during an interview with BizNews, claiming the DA had reported alleged electoral misconduct to the relevant authorities.

He said: “There are also allegations, and I did not see this personally, that young people in all three of those wards were given tik to go and vote.”

Simmers claimed information about vehicles allegedly transporting drugs had been handed to police, while photographs of other alleged irregularities had been submitted to the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC).

He also alleged that people had been paid cash to vote and that multiple food parcels were distributed to households.

“These are not allegations. I saw this. We reported this to the IEC. We gave the IEC the photos,” he said, referring to the alleged cash payments.

Simmers described the PA as a “criminal enterprise under the guise of a political party”, adding that he believed the electoral system needed to be better equipped to deal with alleged criminality during elections.

However, McKenzie hit back, accusing the DA provincial leader of suggesting that coloured people could not think for themselves.

He wysed: “Daai ding sê vir die wit mense the only reason why George people voted for the PA is because we gave them tik.

“He is saying that we are drug dealers. He is saying that coloured people cannot think for themselves. They need to be bribed with tik.

“That is disrespectful. Will he say the same about white people who voted for us? He will never. It has become too convenient for them to insult coloured people.”

The PA leader then threatened legal action against Simmers, demanding that he prove his allegations.

“Ek is nie klaar met jou nie. Ek gaan ’n saak maak. Ek kom jou baklei legally. You must prove that nonsense. Jy’s ’n vuilgat jy!” McKenzie said.

“We are not tikkoppe. Jy raak coloured mense sleg gewoond.”

Simmers maintained during the BizNews interview that the information had been handed to the relevant authorities, questioning why the alleged incidents had not been dealt with.

“The bigger question now is: Is our electoral court sufficient enough to deal with the acts of criminality that you observe? I know the IEC is understaffed. They have all but acknowledged that,” Simmers said.
