Jubilation as Wontumi Recieves Another Good News In Prison

Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, has denied additional criminal allegations in the ongoing case over an alleged GH¢30 million financial loss involving the Ghana Export-Import Bank (EXIM Bank).

The former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is standing trial alongside Thomas Antwi-Boasiako and Wontumi Farms Limited in connection with funding obtained for an agricultural project.

The prosecution revised its charges in September 2026, leading to a fresh plea-taking process to allow the accused persons to respond to the updated allegations.

The offences outlined in the case include obtaining money through false pretences, presenting forged documents, money laundering and deliberately causing financial loss to a public institution.

According to the prosecution’s case, EXIM Bank provided financial support in 2018 for an agricultural venture associated with Wontumi Farms Limited. Investigators allege that the facility was obtained using misleading representations and questionable documentation.

The state further contends that the farming initiative was not carried out as proposed and has raised concerns about the authenticity of documents submitted during the process of securing the funds.

Some of the revised allegations reportedly concern documents said to have originated from EPSONS Ghana Limited in connection with an application for further financial assistance.

Wontumi and his co-accused have rejected the allegations, leaving the prosecution to establish its case before the court. The charges remain allegations and do not constitute proof of guilt.

The proceedings had earlier been adjourned to October 13, 2026, following a request by the defence for more time to study the amended charges.

The legal dispute also involves questions over whether the disagreement surrounding the EXIM Bank facility should be pursued as a criminal matter or handled through civil proceedings. Wontumi and Wontumi Farms Limited have challenged the criminal approach to the dispute.

The case remains significant because of the allegations involving public funds and the potential legal consequences for the accused if the prosecution establishes its claims in court.
