It Has Never Happened Before — Miracles Aboagye Slams Mahama Over Emelia Agbenyo’s EC Appointment
Dennis Miracles Aboagye, a member of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Communications Team, has accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of undermining Ghana’s democracy following the appointment of Emelia Affi Agbenyo as a Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC). He argues that appointing someone who was actively involved in a political party’s campaign to a senior position at the electoral management body raises concerns about the institution’s independence and credibility.
In a post shared on his official Facebook page on October 12, 2026, Aboagye criticised President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to appoint Agbenyo, who served as the NDC’s Spokesperson on the Governance Sector during the 2024 election campaign. He described the appointment as unprecedented in Ghana’s democratic history and questioned the appropriateness of appointing someone with such political affiliations to a leadership position at the EC.
According to Aboagye, the appointment could set a troubling precedent for future governments and weaken public confidence in the independence of the Electoral Commission. He accused the NDC of opening the door to similar appointments in the future, arguing that the development could have far-reaching implications for Ghana’s democratic institutions.
Aboagye further suggested that if Agbenyo’s appointment was considered acceptable, other politically affiliated individuals, including NDC figure Chairman Bamba, could also be appointed as Deputy Chairperson or Chairperson of the Electoral Commission without controversy. He made the comparison sarcastically to highlight what he considers an inconsistency in the standards being applied to appointments to the election management body.
His comments come amid renewed attention to the political neutrality of the Electoral Commission and the expectations surrounding appointments to the institution responsible for overseeing Ghana’s electoral processes. However, Aboagye’s remarks reflect his position on the appointment and do not, in themselves, establish that the decision violates any constitutional or legal requirement.
