(WPDE) — An inmate has been charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death last month of Brian Alexander at Scotland Correctional Institution, according to the Scotland County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO).
Devaunte Barriet also faces a charge of possession of a weapon in a prison.
Deputies responded to the prison around 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 17 after receiving a report that an inmate had been assaulted and stabbed by another inmate.
Alexander, 45, was pronounced dead shortly after deputies arrived.
Detective Goins with SCSO's Criminal Investigation Division investigated with assistance from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and prison personnel.
