Good News For Wontumi As Supreme Court Dismisses Ekwow’s $10 Million Defamation Suit Against Him
The Supreme Court of Ghana has dismissed an appeal by Special Envoy for Reparations Ekwow Spio-Garbrah in a defamation case against Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Spio-Garbrah, who previously served as Minister of Trade and Industry, sued Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, alongside Wontumi TV and Radio.
He sought $10 million in compensation, claiming that comments made by Wontumi had harmed his reputation.
The former minister alleged that Wontumi called him a thief during political discussions and argued that the statement damaged his public image.
The case was initially dismissed by the Kumasi High Court, which found it to be without merit and ordered Spio-Garbrah to pay GH¢150,000 in costs. He later challenged the decision before the Supreme Court.
After reviewing the appeal, a five-member panel of the apex court unanimously dismissed it, ending Spio-Garbrah’s legal challenge.
Wontumi had maintained that he did not intend to defame Spio-Garbrah. He explained that his remarks stemmed from his understanding of comments made by former Tamale Central MP Inusah Fuseini and were not intended as a personal attack.
The ruling concludes the defamation dispute and underscores the legal challenges involved in claims arising from statements made during political debates.
