A 71-year-old contestant taking part in this yearâs Miss Great Britain has insisted "it doesnât matter what age you are, people can do wonderful things".
Ann Marie Harper, from Ayrshire, will make history as the oldest Scottish finalist in the pageantâs 81-year existence.
Known by her alias Glamour Gran Ann, the septuagenarian will compete in the Miss Great Britain Classic event on October 16.
The category is open to women aged 45 and over, pitting her against rivals up to 26 years younger.
Speaking at her Ayrshire studio, Ms Harper described her experience as an "amazing journey".
Her victory at Miss Great Britain Classic Ayrshire in June secured her spot at the Leicester final.
âWhatâs to be will be, but Iâm very excited,â she said.
âI realise this could make history because Iâm over 70, and I donât believe itâs been known before.
âItâs given me a real boost in my life, to say it doesnât matter what age you are, people can do wonderful things.â
She said for her, the competition âreally isnât just about the winningâ â but that she is going into it âwith a positive headâ.
âOf course Glamour Gran Ann wants to win,â she said.
âI want to bring the crown back to Ayrshire. Why would I not?
âThis is Ayrshireâs very first time. Theyâve never done anything like this before.â
The beauty queen launched her own cosmetics brand aged 66, which sells a make-up palette called the Glam Goddess Collection.
She is also very active on social media, and her Instagram and TikTok pages have thousands of followers.
She presented Glamour Gran Ann as a form of joyful self-expression, free from the expectations and limitations placed on her by others.
âIâve always been told all my life âyou canât do this, you canât wear that hat, you canâtâ.â
âWell, Glamour Gran Ann has got hats that size,â she said, spreading out her arms.
âI love big hats. I love furs. Itâs just who I am. But Iâve had to not be like that, and I do get it.
âSometimes you canât always be out there like that. But I am who I am, and I love dressing up. And I get into character.â
She said the âbiggest thingâ she wants to achieve in her work and competitions is to help combat loneliness and isolation â particularly among older people.
As part of this, she does events for the Community Led Action Support Project (Clasp) charity, and regularly attends a pensionersâ club on her street.
âI just want to help people to realise that theyâre not alone â because as you get older, you can go in a corner, and we canât do that,â she explained.
âI show these older people we can wear lipstick. We can go and get our hair done.â
She said the Glam Goddess palette is a way of enabling others to share in her alter ego.
âWhen it was first brought out, I was told by a few different people, âOh, itâs too bright for older people,'â she explained.
ââOlder people could never use that. Youâve made a mistake. Youâve done it wrongâ.
âIn my heart of hearts, probably bringing out a more subtle palette with just browns and beiges would have been good.
âBut thatâs not who Glamour Gran Ann is â Glamour Gran Annâs all about colour and everything.â
She also reflected on her own mental health struggles, explaining that on bad days, she finds it hard to leave the house.
She said growing up in Glasgow, her teachers always told her she was âdaftâ because of her learning difficulties, and she has suffered from severe depression.
âFor people who canât really cope, itâs amazing how there is help out there,â she said.
âThere is help, and we have to seek the help. And thatâs what Glamour Gran Ann shares every single day, that itâs okay not to be okay.
âAnd there are a lot of lonely old souls who really donât go out of the house. And this is what we have to get over.â
