Fireworks Expected as Ruto, Uhuru, Sifuna, Babu Owino Set to Meet in Bondo for Raila’s Anniversary

President William Ruto, former President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leaders are expected to converge in Bondo on Thursday, October 15, for the first anniversary of the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, setting the stage for a politically charged gathering.

The event at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi in Siaya County is expected to bring together leaders from rival political camps at a time when alliances are taking shape ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Raila’s family has extended invitations to leaders across the political divide, including Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

However, Kalonzo has already announced that he will not attend the commemoration, accusing some political leaders of exploiting Raila’s legacy for their own interests.

Ruto and Uhuru’s expected attendance is likely to attract attention, particularly given the changing political relationships among the country’s leading figures.

Ruto entered into a broad-based government arrangement with Raila before his death, while Uhuru maintained close ties with the veteran opposition leader.

Sifuna and Babu, meanwhile, have been prominent critics of the arrangement between President Ruto and ODM. They formed the Linda Mwananchi movement which has been challenging the party’s cooperation with the ruling administration.

The presence of the rival camps could therefore turn the anniversary into a major political moment, although Raila’s family has urged guests to avoid confrontations and competing for public attention.

Raila’s daughter, Winnie Odinga, has appealed to leaders and supporters to respect political differences and focus on celebrating her father’s life and contribution to the country.

She emphasised that the family had invited people with different political beliefs and that nobody would be required to abandon their convictions to attend the event.

Winnie cautioned against turning the gathering into a contest over crowd numbers, popularity or political influence, insisting that the occasion should remain focused on remembrance.

Siaya Governor James Orengo has also welcomed leaders and Kenyans from across the country to attend the commemoration.

Whether the leaders use the occasion to reflect on Raila’s legacy or trade political barbs, all eyes will be on Bondo as Kenya commemorates one of its most influential political figures.
