Examine backgrounds of existing EC commissioners before you make noise – NPP told
NDC communicator Rashid Tanko Computer has challenged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to examine the backgrounds of existing Electoral Commission (EC) members before questioning the political neutrality of newly appointed Deputy Chairperson Emelia Afi Agbenyo.
Reacting to criticism of Agbenyo’s appointment during a discussion with Keminni Amanor on TV3, the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) CEO pointed to earlier appointments under former President Nana Akufo-Addo.
Tanko cited Professor Appiahene, whom he said had served as an NPP regional election director, and Hajia Salima Ahmed Tijani, whose political background he also questioned.
He argued that the NDC had raised objections to the appointments at the time but was told that qualification and the President’s authority to appoint were the relevant considerations.
Tanko also challenged critics to examine the backgrounds of the commissioners currently serving on the EC.
“Go and check who appointed them and where their background,” he said, urging the public to consider whether the same objections were being applied consistently.
