Enugu police launch investigation into viral video of elderly woman assaulted over witchcraft allegation
The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has ordered the State CID to investigate a viral video depicting the alleged trial by ordeal and assault of a 60-year-old woman identified as Chinenye Okonkwo, in Amafu Village, Ugbawka, Nkanu East LGA some days ago.
Videos of the elderly woman being paraded by some villagers who sang songs to humiliate her, made the rounds on social media last week.
Reacting to the viral video, Police operatives from the Nkanu East Division visited the victim and took her statement. Preliminary findings indicate that she was allegedly subjected to severe abuse, including being forced to eat human faeces, over accusations of witchcraft and responsibility for the death of her husband’s brother’s wife.
Confirming the launch of an investigation to newsmen, the command’s spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, said efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest the perpetrators, who are currently at large.
