Emelia Afi Agbenyo’s Old NDC Campaign Posts Resurface After EC Appointment

Newly sworn-in Electoral Commission (EC) Deputy Chairperson Emelia Afi Agbenyo has faced criticism on social media over her political activities and public comments ahead of Ghana’s 2024 general election.

A series of posts shared on X and other social media platforms, which were highlighted by GhanaWeb on October 12, 2026, have reignited debate about her suitability for the position.

The posts, published before the 2024 elections, showed Agbenyo expressing support for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and criticizing the then Akufo-Addo-led government over its handling of economic challenges.

In one of the posts, she condemned the government’s decision to introduce a levy, arguing that the administration had failed to show sufficient consideration for the difficulties faced by ordinary Ghanaians.

Her comments have resurfaced following her appointment to the Electoral Commission, with some social media users questioning whether her previous political engagements could affect perceptions of her neutrality in the role.

“I will be voting against a government that ridiculed the pains of the people. Imposing a nuisance levy on citizens is not a thing to celebrate. Governance is no joke; citizens are not your enemies,” she posted.

An August 25, 2024, GhanaWeb report has also regained attention online. The publication highlighted Agbenyo’s involvement in the NDC’s campaign activities ahead of the 2024 general election.

Before the polls, she served on the party’s governance team as a sectoral spokesperson for its Resetting Ghana manifesto, working alongside Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and Sylvester Mensah.

The resurfaced report and her earlier social media activity have triggered further discussions about the political backgrounds of individuals appointed to senior positions at the Electoral Commission.

Some critics have questioned her qualifications for the deputy chairperson position, while others have raised concerns about whether her previous association with the NDC could undermine confidence in the Commission’s independence.

Certain social media users have also alleged that her political affiliations could influence the conduct of the 2028 general election in favour of the governing party.

However, these claims remain allegations and do not establish that she would act improperly in office.

The controversy follows President John Dramani Mahama’s appointment and swearing-in of Agbenyo and Dr Joseph Kwaku Asamoah as Deputy Chairpersons of the Electoral Commission on October 12, 2026.

During the ceremony at Jubilee House, the President urged both officials to discharge their responsibilities impartially and ensure that all political parties receive equal treatment.
