Former Deputy National Police Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya is expected back in the Randburg Magistrates Court on Tuesday for the continuation of his bail hearing.

Sibiya returns to court a day after resigning from the South African Police Service (SAPS).

His legal team confirmed the resignation was made during an internal disciplinary hearing on Monday, where the top cop faces corruption and misconduct charges.

With his resignation, Sibiya’s focus now shifts to his criminal case, where he faces allegations of sexually grooming a 16-year-old girl and raping her 18-year-old friend.

Sibiya’s bail application has been ongoing for nearly three weeks, with the State continuing to oppose his release.

During previous court appearances, the State called the investigating officer, Nokukhanya Ndlovu, who presented varying pieces of evidence in opposition to Sibiya’s bail application.

Among those were phone recordings, where Sibiya is allegedly heard threatening the father of a minor he is accused of sexually grooming.

“Sibiya initiated a WhatsApp communication [with] the minor and manipulated her by tricking her to say that she likes him. This will be ventilated during the trial.”

The State is yet to conclude its submissions opposing bail for him.
