DVLA’s GH¢800,000 Investment in Rented Bechem Office Generates Over GH¢5 Million
According to a report by ChannelOne News published on October 12, 2026, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has generated more than GH¢5 million in revenue from its rented office in Bechem after investing approximately GH¢800,000 in renovations, equipment and preparations to make the facility operational.
The Chief Executive Officer of the DVLA, Julius Neequaye Kotey, disclosed this during an interview on Eyewitness News on Monday, October 12, 2026. He explained that the office had been commissioned the previous year and had already generated revenue exceeding the initial investment.
According to Kotey, the authority rented an existing building instead of constructing a new one. The money was used to renovate the premises and purchase the machines and other equipment required to provide services to the public.
He said the results demonstrated that the DVLA could expand its operations and bring services closer to residents without necessarily owning the buildings in which it operates.
Kotey explained that the authority was moving away from the idea that it must first construct and complete its own office before beginning operations in a particular community. Instead, it could identify suitable rented premises, equip them and begin serving the public.
He also pointed to private vehicle testing stations as an example of how the authority could deliver services through alternative arrangements. These stations have been legally authorised to conduct vehicle inspections on behalf of the DVLA since 2002.
The approach forms part of wider efforts to expand access to driver and vehicle licensing services across Ghana. On October 12, the DVLA chief executive also reported that the authority had opened 30 new offices within 18 months, increasing its visible service locations from 33 to 63. The expansion includes both DVLA-operated offices and privately supported Ultra Centres.
