The shooting happened Saturday at a home on Pecan Street. Just after 1 p.m., Abilene police responded to a welfare check and found a man dead outside the property.
While officers were investigating, court documents say 45-year-old Joseph Adam Soliz III approached them and admitted to shooting the man.

Soliz initially claimed the victim had attacked him with a loaded syringe, but investigators said his account later changed.
During a later interview, investigators said Soliz described the victim making movements he perceived as threatening, but did not claim the man physically attacked him with the syringe.

The affidavit also says investigators spoke with Solizâs father, who told detectives his son called him around noon and admitted to shooting someone.
His father told detectives he initially dismissed the claim, citing previous statements he believed were delusional.

Police later recovered a firearm believed to have been used in the shooting from the fatherâs home.

Investigators also raised concerns about possible drug use, saying Soliz appeared unusually animated and made rambling statements after the shooting.
Detectives obtained a search warrant for his blood to determine whether methamphetamine or other substances may have played a role.

The documents do not include toxicology results, and investigators have not confirmed whether Soliz was under the influence at the time.
