Chelsea tipped to make another £100m signing but back-up player could save club a fortune

Chelsea could have an opportunity to avoid another costly transfer by investing in the development of young goalkeeper Mike Penders, whose potential may offer the club a long-term solution between the posts.

According to The Chelsea Chronicle in a report published on Friday, October 9, 2026, the suggestion comes amid growing expectations that elite goalkeepers could eventually attract transfer fees of around £100 million. Former Premier League goalkeeper Shaka Hislop believes clubs may be prepared to pay such extraordinary sums for a young shot-stopper capable of delivering consistent performances over many years.

Chelsea have already spent heavily on strengthening their squad, committing £117 million to Morgan Rogers, £115 million to Moises Caicedo and £107 million to Enzo Fernandez. The club also paid £97.5 million to bring Romelu Lukaku back from Inter Milan in 2021, underlining its willingness to make substantial financial commitments in the transfer market.

Hislop believes the market for goalkeepers could become increasingly expensive as major clubs compete to secure exceptional prospects. Speaking to Goal, he remarked that the clubs making such significant investments were the ones spending heavily, highlighting the financial power that could shape future goalkeeper transfers.

He also referred to the early careers of David de Gea and Thibaut Courtois, who established themselves at prominent clubs while still teenagers. In Hislop’s view, their progress demonstrates why teams might be willing to spend heavily on a young goalkeeper who shows the potential to become a dependable first-choice player for years.

Chelsea may already have a prospect capable of developing into that kind of asset in Penders, the 21-year-old Belgian goalkeeper. Standing at 6 feet 7 inches, he possesses an imposing physical presence that could help him deal with aerial deliveries, command his penalty area and challenge opponents during set pieces. Comparisons with Courtois, who previously enjoyed success at Stamford Bridge, have also drawn attention to the youngster’s potential.

Penders is yet to make his Premier League debut for Chelsea, but his appearances in the Carabao Cup have offered an early indication of his abilities. During the match against Leeds United, he made three saves and collected two high balls, despite Chelsea conceding three goals. While those statistics provide some encouraging signs, a larger body of performances will be necessary to determine whether he can consistently meet the demands of top-level football.

Chelsea also strengthened their goalkeeping options during the summer by signing Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. He is expected to remain the club’s leading option for the foreseeable future, providing experience as the team seeks greater stability in the position. Former Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman has backed the decision to bring Martinez to Stamford Bridge, suggesting that the experienced goalkeeper could offer valuable reassurance.

Martinez’s arrival does not necessarily rule out a future opportunity for Penders. If the Belgian continues to improve, Chelsea could gradually increase his responsibilities and allow him to compete for the starting role when the time is right.

Rather than entering the transfer market again for an exceptionally expensive goalkeeper, Chelsea could benefit from carefully managing Penders’ development. Giving him opportunities to gain experience while learning from an established senior player could provide a more sustainable route to strengthening the position.

Although his long-term prospects remain uncertain, developing Penders into a reliable first-team goalkeeper could reduce Chelsea’s need for another major purchase and potentially save the club millions of pounds in future transfer expenditure.
