Atletico took control of the contest with goals in either half, leaving United unable to find a way back into the match.

The hosts made the breakthrough in the 2nd minute through G. Stensness, who converted Z. Tripic’s assist to give Atletico an early advantage.

United struggled to respond as Atletico maintained their pressure, and the home side doubled their lead in the 38th minute when P. Christiansen finished off E. Botheim’s pass.

Atletico went into the half-time break with a comfortable 2-0 lead, having made the most of their opportunities.

United attempted to rally after the restart, but Atletico’s defensive organisation limited the visitors’ chances of reducing the deficit.

The result represents a setback for Manchester United’s Champions League campaign, while Atletico will take confidence from a disciplined performance that secured all three points.
