Chairman Wontumi’s Condition Behind Bars: What Ken Kuranchie Disclosed After Court Proceedings

Private legal practitioner Ken Kuranchie has disclosed that former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is doing well despite his incarceration.

“He looks well, strong and clean. When you are in prison, that is the best thing you can hope for. He looks absolutely well. I am glad I saw him,” he said.

Kuranchie made the disclosure in an interview with Citi News on October 13, 2026, following court proceedings in the case involving the Ghana Export-Import Bank (EXIM Bank).

He said he was pleased to see Wontumi in good condition, describing him as a longtime friend.

He noted that Wontumi appeared healthy, strong and well-groomed, expressing relief at his friend’s condition while in prison.

Meanwhile, Wontumi has pleaded not guilty to five charges connected to the alleged fraudulent acquisition of GH¢14.3 million from EXIM Bank for a proposed large-scale farming project.

The charges relate to allegations that funds were improperly obtained from the state-owned financial institution in connection with the planned agricultural venture.

Wontumi is also serving a 20-year prison sentence imposed by the Accra High Court on July 20, 2026, following his conviction on six charges linked to illegal mining activities on the Samreboi concession in the Western Region.
