Canadian Couple Who Win Lottery Twice in Eight Years Reveal How They Landed Two Jackpots

Angelina and Edward Lado, a Canadian couple originally from South Sudan, have won their second lottery jackpot in eight years, bringing their total winnings to $3.175 million Atlantic Lottery Corporation A Canadian couple who scooped a record-breaking $2.5 million (£1.9 million) lottery jackpot have struck gold again eight years later, winning another $675,000 (£511,000) from a scratch ticket costing just $4 (£3).

Angelina and Edward Lado, originally from South Sudan, have now collected a combined $3.175 million (£2.401 million) in lottery prizes, leaving even the husband struggling to believe their extraordinary luck.

But when asked how they managed to win twice, Edward revealed an unexpectedly simple approach that involved no secret formula or special strategy.

The couple’s second lottery win came after Angelina purchased a $4 Set for Life Scratch ‘N Win ticket at Marie’s Mini Mart on Kiwanis Street in St John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.

According to Atlantic Lottery, the ticket offered two top-prize options: $1,000 (£756) every week for 25 years or a $675,000 (approximately £510,370) lump-sum payment. The Lados chose the immediate cash payout.

Edward initially refused to believe his wife when she broke the news. ‘I thought maybe she was bluffing when she told me, I really couldn’t believe it,’ he said. He recalled asking Angelina to remain calm until he returned home to verify the ticket.

Despite winning two major jackpots, Edward insisted their approach was straightforward: they continued buying tickets without spending excessively. ‘We play but modestly, especially now, but if you don’t play, you don’t win,’ he explained.

He also revealed that the couple had previously purchased more expensive lottery tickets without securing significant prizes, making their latest $4 victory particularly surprising. Their repeated success, however, does not indicate a guaranteed winning method, as scratch-ticket results depend on chance.

Angelina and Edward moved from South Sudan to Canada approximately 11 years before their first major lottery victory in 2018. That year, they won $2.5 million through Atlantic Lottery’s Multi-Millionaire Scratch ‘N Win game, setting a record for the largest scratch-ticket prize awarded in Newfoundland and Labrador at the time.

Beyond the financial windfall, their first jackpot carried deeply personal significance. Edward revealed that he hoped to use some of the money to find his mother, whom he had not seen since infancy. He explained that she was believed to be living in a refugee camp in Uganda, and the winnings could finally make a reunion possible.

‘I will go to find her and hopefully bring her here,’ he said in 2018. Whether the long-awaited reunion eventually took place has not been publicly confirmed.

Following their latest win, the Lados intend to use part of their $675,000 prize to support their children, who are attending college and university. Atlantic Lottery confirmed that the couple want to help cover educational expenses and give their children a financial head start.

However, they have no immediate plans to make major purchases or rush into further decisions. Edward said they were still processing the unexpected windfall and preferred to consider their options carefully.

‘We don’t want to rush into anything, taking our time is the best option and things will fall into place as life progresses,’ he said.

The couple have also entertained the possibility of returning to claim a third major lottery prize, according to Atlantic Lottery.
