Boxing Legend Mike Tyson Reveals He Nearly Died From Overdose
Former world heavyweight champion Mike Tyson isnât afraid to open up about his history with drugs.
On Tuesday, Oct. 13, Netflix debuted its four-part docuseries called âTyson.â The show describes the legendary boxerâs âchaotic upbringingâ as well as his rise to stardom at the young age of 20.
During this Netflix docuseries, Tyson admit that he overdosed multiple times. There was one incident in particular that truly frightened him.
âWhen I think about a low point, I think about this â ODâing. Iâm bleeding out, my nose is bleeding and Iâm hysterical. Iâm sweating,â Tyson said, via The Sun. âI ODâd, Iâve done it plenty of times but this one was a little more extreme than others.â
Tyson, who has 44 career knockouts to his name, was arrested for drug possession and DUI back in December 2006.
Tyson, 60, later revealed that he smoked toad venom to help with his drug addiction.
âI did it as a dare,â Tyson said then. âI was doing heavy drugs like cocaine, so why not? Itâs another dimension. Before I did the toad, I was a wreck. The toughest opponent I ever faced was myself. I had low self-esteem. People with big egos often have low self-esteem. We use our ego to subsidize that. The toad strips the ego.â
According to Tyson, he hasnât used cocaine since smoking toad venom. Fans can learn more about âIron Mikeâ in his docuseries.
