Body of Missing 83-Year-Old Maple Man Recovered in Northern Wisconsin

NORTHERN WISCONSIN — The body of an 83-year-old Maple man who went missing last month was recovered Monday afternoon in Cloverland Township, according to a press release from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department.

The body of Robert Miller was recovered by searchers Monday afternoon in an area about a mile south of McNeil’s Landing Rd. in Cloverland Township.

Miller was reported missing Friday night September 18 by family members who arrived at his home to find he wasn’t there. A map and notes found in the kitchen indicated Miller had intended to go to the Brule River to look at fish near the lamprey weir.

Miller’s vehicle was located at 2am on September 19th parked along McNeil’s Landing Road. An extensive search began on Saturday morning September 19 using ground searchers and technology to include drones, fixed wing aircraft, sonar, ROV, underwater cameras, and thermal imaging.

Hundreds of searchers and volunteers from various agencies/entities participated in daily searches: Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Douglas County Emergency Management, Douglas County Forestry, Civil Air Patrol, Wisconsin State Patrol, Wisconsin DNR, St.Louis County Rescue Squad and K9 Teams, Mid-MN K9 Team, Sawyer County K9 Team, Mayo Ambulance, and volunteer fire fighters from the following townships: Amnicon, Brule, Cloverland, Hawthorne, Highland, Lake Nebagamon, Lakeside, Maple, Oakland, Parkland, and Poplar.

The Town of Cloverland provided their town hall as a command post and numerous citizens provided food, water, and information.

An autopsy will be conducted this week to determine cause of death, foul play is not suspected.
