Struggling Manchester United resume their Champions League campaign with a trip to Atletico Madrid in the league phase.

It’s been a difficult few weeks for Michael Carrick’s side, who are winless in their last four games and picked up after the extended international break exactly where they left off, with a poor showing and 1-1 stalemate with 10-man Tottenham in the Premier League.

Spurs’ injury-time equaliser sparked boos from the Old Trafford faithful and pressure is mounting on an underperforming side, who now take on in-form Atletico.

Diego Simeone’s men have won their last four games, beating 10-man Alaves 2-1 last time out, and have something of a fortress at the Metropolitano – they have only lost two of 19 games against English sides at home – giving United even more of an uphill battle to look forward to.

Follow latest updates from the Metropolitano with our live blog below:

Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo haven’t travelled with the Manchester United squad having missed training ahead of the game.

Michael Carrick confirmed that both players picked up knocks in the match against Spurs at the weekend.

Matthijs de Ligt is back with the squad however and could be given minutes as he makes a comeback from injury.

Patrick Dorgu, Noussair Mazraoui, Manuel Ugarte and Benjamin Sesko have been sidelined due to injury.

Tonight’s match will be broadcast on Amazon Prime Video with coverage starting at 6.30pm ahead of an 8pm kick off.

The Champions League encounter between Atletico Madrid and Manchester United takes place on Tuesday 13 October with kick off at 8pm.

The game is being played at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid.

Welcome to The Independent’s coverage of tonight’s Champions League action as Manchester United travel to Atletico Madrid with the aim of getting back to winning ways.

It’s been a while since Michael Carrick’s side won a match, with their last victory coming on September 10 with a 4-0 victory over Azerbaijan side Sabah.

That win sits them fourth in the Champions League table but they’ll face a much tougher test against Atletico this evening.

This match is the first of two crucial outings for Carrick and co. with a tricky encounter against Leeds in the Premier League following this weekend. Can United build some confidence with a win tonight?
