Arsenal’s strong second half seals win over Lille

Updates from nine Champions League matches

Gary Rose, Jess Anderson and Charlotte Coates

Not United's worse performance (not a high bar admittedly), if they had taken their chances they could have got something from the game. Plus I don’t think was a red. But as always they cause their own problems and seem to make life harder than it needs to be.

[Carrick] needs a result. I don't care who or what you are, what the size of the club is or how much has been spent. What it all boils down to is attitude. It's results. And at the moment they haven't been good enough.

I said before the game, and during, that they need to stick with him. They can't keep thinking, I'll get ride of another manager, bring another one in. It doesn't work like that.

It has been a decent enough performance but as soon as Manchester United went down to 10 men it was always going to be an uphill struggle.

It's a difficult place to come and that made their task 10 times harder.

It'll be interesting to hear what Michael Carrick has got to say. I don't think he'll be overly down and disappointed with the way that his side has played.

I love how Mikel Arteta has put Max Dowman right into his favourite position. The experience is now more important for Dowman than keeping Saka in that position.

He's not going to score an easier goal, Lookman.

It's a really good save initially from Lammens. He gets very unlucky.

You feel that's it done for Manchester United.

I think it's a nice touch – Olivier Giroud definitely deserves an ovation. Arsenal fans showing the respect to the service and the quality that he brought to them.

But for me, the Lille manager waited too long to make these substitutions. I think they could have done with Giroud a lot earlier because Lille have struggled to keep the ball this whole second half and they have missed that focal point that can hold the ball up.

Football reporter at Emirates StadiumArsenal scored three goals in seven second-half minutes to maintain their perfect start to the league phase of the Champions League by beating Lille at Emirates Stadium.

Defender Jurrien Timber sent them on their way in the 64th minute after he collected a pass from Noni Madueke and lifted a clever finish over Berke Ozer.

England forward Eberechi Eze added the second three minutes later when he finished first time from substitute Bukayo Saka's cross.

Having won at Napoli, Arsenal sealed a second victory in the competition when Saka himself rolled in the third in the 71st minute.

Boss Mikel Arteta had made five changes to the side that beat Leeds 2-1 in the Premier League at the weekend, but the frontline of Eze, Madueke and Viktor Gyokeres did not click in a laboured first half from the Gunners.

He resisted the temptation to make wholesale changes at the break and was rewarded when Dutch defender Timber found the breakthrough with a neat finish.

Saka, Kai Havertz and captain Martin Odegaard were then introduced and all three substitutes played a major role in the next two goals as last season's beaten finalists wrapped up a convincing success.

Arsenal won all eight of their league phase games in the previous campaign before they lost the final to Paris St-Germain – and look like they will be hard to beat at this stage of the competition again.

What do BBC Sport's player ratings mean?

Published21 AugustSaka stars off bench – Arsenal player ratingsDavid Raya: Not tested at all by the Lille attack. 6

Jurrien Timber: Scored a fine opening goal as he looks to be build back to full fitness after early-season injury issues. 7

Ezri Konsa: An assured performance. Looks to be building his partnership with Gabriel nicely. 7

Gabriel Magalhaes: An excellent block in the first half and very comfortable all evening. 7

Myles Lewis-Skelly: Moved to left-back for this game after becoming a regular in midfield. A couple of decent crosses. 6

Declan Rice: Given the captain's armband as he anchored the Arsenal midfield. A solid performance as always. 7

Bruno Guimaraes: Tried to inject energy into the midfield. Should have scored with an early chance and tested the Lille goalkeeper with a speculative effort. 6

Mikel Merino: Tidy in possession but not his best in an Arsenal shirt. 6

Noni Madueke: After putting in one of his better performances on the opposite wing in the Premier League win over Leeds, he was given a chance from the right. Some inconsistent play but got the assist for the opener. 7

Eberechi Eze: The forward's third start of the season and a big chance to impress with supporters expecting more from the England international. Flashes of his quality and scored the second goal. 7

Viktor Gyokeres: An ineffective first half and had just 12 touches of the ball before he was replaced. 5

Bukayo Saka (on 65, Madueke): Changed the momentum of the game. Scored a goal and got an assist 8

Martin Odegaard (on 65, Merino): His energy and drive lifted the team. 7

Kai Havertz (on 65, Gyokeres): Assisted Saka for his goal. 7

Max Dowman (on 85, Eze): Introduced on the right wing. 6

Subs not used: Arrizabalaga, Meslier, Mosquera, Calafiori, O'Neil, Hashi, Salmon.
