Antonio Valencia Tells Man Utd to Sign £115m Chelsea Star And Gives Michael Carrick Sack Verdict
According to a report by Manchesterevening News on Tuesday October 13, 2026, Former Manchester United star Antonio Valencia has urged the club to pursue Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo, while encouraging INEOS to remain patient with manager Michael Carrick despite the team’s difficult start.
United have collected just six points from their opening six Premier League matches, raising concerns about their performances. Valencia believes additional quality is needed to help Carrick improve the squad and restore consistency.
Caicedo joined Chelsea from Brighton in 2023 for a reported £115 million. The Ecuadorian midfielder has since established himself as an important figure at Stamford Bridge and recently impressed during Chelsea’s emphatic 5-1 victory over Bournemouth.
Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson praised Caicedo after that performance, describing him as “the best holding midfield player in the world of football”, underlining the qualities Valencia believes United should target.
Speaking about United’s struggles, Valencia admitted the campaign had started poorly but insisted the club needed two or three more signings to improve its fortunes.
“I’d sign another midfielder,” Valencia explained. “I’d bring in a player like Moises Caicedo, keeping it local. And then I’d bring in a centre-back and a right or left full-back.”
Despite the disappointing results, Valencia has also called on INEOS to give Carrick sufficient time to establish himself as manager. He believes the former United midfielder possesses the leadership qualities and tactical understanding required for the position.
Recalling their time together as teammates, Valencia described Carrick as an “incredible” leader who understood matches well and regularly demonstrated an interest in coaching after training sessions.
Valencia also praised Carrick’s calm personality, intelligence and respectful communication, explaining that he never behaved arrogantly while developing his coaching knowledge. The former winger believes Carrick has the ability to manage Manchester United successfully.
However, Valencia remains doubtful that United can compete for the Premier League title this season. He acknowledged his emotional connection with the club, having spent 14 years there, and expressed sympathy for supporters.
“I carry Manchester in my heart because of all the affection the fans always showed me,” Valencia said, while admitting United currently appear some distance behind the strongest teams in England.
