Will Josh Brolin’s Thanos Return in Phase 6? Avengers Star Surprises With 1 Word

Josh Brolin offered a tantalizing response about reprising his role as Thanos in Avengers: Doomsday. Speaking with ScreenRant at New York Comic-Con 2026, the actor neither confirmed nor denied his involvement in Marvel’s next Phase 6 film.

Brolin compared the situation to the long-discussed Goonies sequel. “It’s kind of like The Goonies, where you go, ‘I know you want another one. I want another one, too. But should we do one?’” he said. He then acknowledged the significance of the project and his connection to the character. “The fact that it’s come back around, the fact that it’s Joe Russo, the fact that it’s one of the most favorite characters I’ve ever played… Maybe.”

This continues a pattern of openness from Brolin regarding a potential return. During a 2025 appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, he expressed strong enthusiasm for working with the Russo brothers again. “If they called me in London right now and said, ‘Let’s do this,’ I’d be like, ‘I’ll be there tomorrow,’” Brolin said at the time.

Several story threads make a Thanos return plausible. Avengers Endgame: Encore showed Doctor Doom traveling the multiverse and recruiting powerful figures. The Russos confirmed Bruce Banner was just his first recruit. A Thanos variant could bolster Doom’s growing team considerably.

Comic book readers have long wanted one particular Secret Wars panel adapted for the big screen. In that moment, Doom overpowers Thanos in devastating fashion. Bringing that scene to life would instantly cement Doom as the MCU’s most fearsome villain. Still, Brolin’s character has already died twice on screen, raising questions about the scope of any potential appearance.

Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on May 1, 2026, with the Russo brothers directing and Robert Downey Jr. portraying Doctor Doom.
