Why Was There KSh 14.7 Million in the Car? Raila’s Bodyguard Breaks His Silence

Maurice Ogeta, the longtime aide and bodyguard who served the late Raila Odinga for 29 years, has opened up about one of the most harrowing episodes of his career. He was abducted during the 2023 protests against the government, and he lost KSh 14.7 million in cash that was inside his car.

Ogeta has now explained why he was carrying such a large amount of money. He said he was on his way to hand it over to Raila when he was taken. He added that the money belonged partly to him and partly to the former prime minister.

The bodyguard also spoke about how their movements became known during the demonstrations. He claimed that Professor Makau was broadcasting their movements live, which he felt put them at serious risk. According to Ogeta, the broadcast showed their position in the vehicle as events unfolded. He said some people within their circle exposed him, and to this day he is not sure whether he has forgiven the professor for it

Ogeta first met Raila by chance in 1997 while working at a health and fitness centre in Nairobi. That meeting began a working relationship that lasted nearly three decades. He has been reflecting on their shared journey as the first anniversary of the veteran politician’s death approaches on October 15.

His account has drawn fresh attention to the abduction and to the questions Kenyans have asked about the cash in the car. For many, his explanation finally answers a question that has lingered for years.
