US Embassy allocated 960 visa appointments for Ghana’s sponsored WC supporters – Minister
The United States Embassy set aside 960 visa appointments for supporters whom the government planned to sponsor to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams has said.
The appointments were scheduled for May 26 and May 29, 2026, according to details Adams presented during an interview on TV3’s Hot Issues with Keminni Amanor.
He said the embassy had allocated specific time slots for the government-sponsored supporters, while other fans remained free to apply through the regular visa process.
Adams said the embassy had tentatively set aside time from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 26, and from 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Friday, May 29.
The two sessions were expected to provide a total of 960 appointments for supporters who would receive financial support from the government to travel to the United States for the tournament.
Adams stressed that the appointments were intended for the group being sponsored by the government, not all Ghanaian supporters planning to attend the World Cup.
“However, supporters may also apply through the normal process,” he said.
During the interview, he clarified that the supporters formed a separate group from the Black Stars players and their families, government officials travelling on official duties, and personnel from affiliated institutions.
“So we had Black Stars players. We had government of Ghana officials who will be travelling purposely to perform official functions in relation to the World Cup, like maybe myself, chief director, and then you have the GFA, you have GTA and NSA. Then now you have the supporters,” he said.
The details were part of Adams’ account of the government’s engagement with the US Embassy on travel arrangements for the tournament.
