Witnesses reveal what the tiger attack victim told the animal during his final moments.
A man died after a tiger attack at Yorkshire Wildlife Park near Doncaster on Saturday afternoon. Witnesses have described the victim’s final moments inside the enclosure and the words he directed at the animal during the incident. The man entered the space on his own from a raised viewing walkway and was pronounced dead at the scene despite a rapid emergency response.
Click for sound 0:00 / 0:00 Eyewitnesses said people nearby urgently told the victim to “play dead” as the tiger approached. He did not appear to understand the instruction.
Instead, he went with a three-word message: “stop being naughty.”
Anthony Hunt was visiting the park with his girlfriend, Scarlet, on a date. They had been taking pictures of the animal, called Altai, when its behavior suddenly shifted, Sky News reported.
“We noticed the tiger’s behaviour change. Its eyes locked on to something in the enclosure. We thought maybe he’s getting fed. When Scarlett was taking photos – we suddenly saw in the camera lens that a guy had entered the enclosure,” Hunt said.
The victim bowed to the ground on all fours, began praying, and looked up at the sky. The tiger remained on its landing at first, then leaped off and sniffed the man. Hunt described the victim as almost “in a trance” and “not attached to reality.”
Alex Underwood spotted the same man earlier while standing on the tiger bridge with his girlfriend. The man was dancing with his earphones in and asked for photos.

“We were on the tiger bridge and I spotted him – he was dancing with his earphones on,” Underwood said. “He said ‘can you take a photo of me please?’. She said ‘yes’. Then he said ‘another one, another one’. He didn’t look into the camera. He looked at us both and said thank you.”
Underwood and his girlfriend left the bridge shortly afterward. Later, they heard someone had jumped into the enclosure and thought of the man. Another woman near the area said she tried to pull him back but could not stop him. She appeared shaken afterward.
South Yorkshire Police received reports around 1:35 p.m. of a man entering the tiger enclosure at the park. The tiger subsequently attacked the man, resulting in serious injury. Emergency services, including two land ambulances, the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, and a doctor, attended the scene. The man was pronounced dead despite medical efforts.
Animal keeper Reece Oliver told Sky News the roughly 200kg Amur tiger was probably “just playing” when it began pawing at the man.
“If it really wanted to kill him, it would have probably killed him within 10 seconds,” Oliver said. “I don’t think it knew what he was going to do, because the only thing that goes into that enclosure normally would be enrichment toys or food. So, I think he was probably just playing, using his predatory instinct, seeing what it was, what he was, and unfortunately it ended up being a fatal attack.”
Yorkshire Wildlife Park confirmed that Altai remains “safe and well” and will not be euthanised.
