Picture: Sunday Times/Thapelo Morebudi Suspended deputy national police commissioner Lt-Gen Shadrack Sibiya has resigned from the South African Police Service (SAPS).
Sibiyaās resignation took effect on Monday after his legal representative tendered it shortly after his disciplinary hearing began, SAPS spokesperson Brig Athlenda Mathe confirmed.
āThe disciplinary hearing against Lt-Gen Sibiya sat this morning. His legal representative tendered his resignation immediately after the disciplinary proceedings had commenced,ā Mathe said.
SAPS said his departure was considered a dishonourable discharge because disciplinary proceedings were pending against him at the time of his resignation.
āAs the former senior officer had an ongoing disciplinary case against him at the time of his resignation, his departure is therefore regarded as a dishonourable discharge.ā
SAPS confirmed his employment had been terminated with immediate effect.
The resignation brings Sibiyaās career in the police service to an end as he faces allegations of misconduct linked to claims aired at the Madlanga commission of inquiry.
Sibiya was facing seven disciplinary charges, including allegations relating to his interactions with controversial businessman Vusimusi āCatā Matlala, the handling of confidential police information and alleged interference in police investigations.
The allegations have formed part of wider scrutiny of possible criminal infiltration and undue influence within the criminal justice system.
Sibiya is in custody on charges of rape and sexual grooming of a teenager. He is expected to appear at the Randburg magistrateās court on Tuesday.
