Real Madrid summer signing Bernardo Silva loses prominence under Jose Mourinho

According to a report by Madrid Universal on Sunday, October 11, 2026, Bernardo Silva is struggling to secure a regular starting place at Real Madrid under manager Jose Mourinho, just months after joining the Spanish giants on a free transfer from Manchester City.

The Portuguese midfielder arrived at the Santiago Bernabeu during the summer following the departures of Luka Modric and Toni Kroos. His signing was expected to strengthen Real Madrid’s creativity in midfield, particularly after the club failed to recruit another central midfielder during the transfer window.

However, Silva has struggled to make the expected impact since joining the team. During pre season, Mourinho experimented with the 32 year old in a deeper midfield role rather than his preferred position on the right side of the attack.

The change has reportedly limited Silva’s influence, while the return of Aurelien Tchouameni to full fitness and the emergence of Arda Guler have increased competition for places.

Silva’s reduced role was evident during Real Madrid’s recent La Liga encounter against Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabeu, where he remained an unused substitute.

The former Manchester City captain has made six appearances in La Liga, starting three matches and coming off the bench in the other three. He has accumulated just 282 minutes across Real Madrid’s eight league fixtures.

Silva also missed the Champions League match against Inter Milan because of a suspension carried over from his time at Manchester City. As a result, he is yet to make his European debut for Real Madrid this season.

The Portuguese international could receive another opportunity in the upcoming European fixture against AS Roma. However, he will need to make the most of any chances presented to him if he hopes to regain a regular starting position.

With competition for places increasing, Silva faces an important period as he attempts to convince Mourinho that he deserves a more prominent role in the team.
