Real Madrid Agree Deal With ‘Best in The World
According to a report by Football Transfer on Monday October 12, 2026, Real Madrid have reportedly reached an agreement with Thibaut Courtois over another contract extension, with the Belgian goalkeeper expected to remain at the Santiago Bernabeu until 2028, according to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The 34-year-old has continued to demonstrate his importance to the Spanish giants, establishing himself as one of the world’s finest goalkeepers since arriving from Chelsea in 2018 after impressing in England.
Courtois joined Madrid for approximately €35 million and has proved an outstanding investment, helping the club secure two Champions League trophies and three league titles during his successful spell in the Spanish capital.
Meanwhile, Chelsea have struggled to find a reliable successor since selling the Belgian, with Kepa Arrizabalaga’s €80 million transfer failing to deliver the expected results despite the significant financial investment.
Courtois previously extended his Madrid contract until 2027, and many expected that agreement to be his final one. However, fresh reports suggest the goalkeeper is preparing to commit his future further.
According to Romano and Spanish newspaper MARCA, both parties have reached an agreement in principle over a new deal running until 2028, although the formal signing is expected to follow.
Romano explained that Madrid regard the Belgian as an essential member of their squad, writing: “The club consider Courtois a key player, top in the world, and the new deal will be signed soon after the verbal agreement.”
The proposed extension follows Madrid’s established policy of generally offering players aged above 30 contracts on a yearly basis, meaning Courtois is unlikely to receive exceptional treatment despite his importance.
The development could also affect Andriy Lunin’s future at the club. The Ukrainian goalkeeper has frequently been linked with a departure because of limited opportunities behind Courtois, and another extension may intensify those concerns.
Courtois will be 36 when the proposed agreement expires, but retirement does not appear imminent. The experienced goalkeeper recently revealed his determination to continue playing for several more seasons.
“I still want to play five or six more years,” Courtois said, suggesting that his career could extend beyond his anticipated Madrid contract if his fitness and performances remain strong.
