Pueblo Police provide update on officer-involved shooting over weekend that killed one

(KRDO) — The Pueblo Police Department (PPD) is providing an update on the two injured in an officer-involved shooting that killed one man over the weekend.

According to PPD, Officer Justin Ortiz sustained a graze wound to their ankle. The second officer involved, Officer Jonathon Woehler, suffered gunshot wounds to both legs and was taken to a local hospital. PPD says they were released today and still recovering.

“We would also like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the Pueblo community for the overwhelming support, prayers, and well-wishes extended to our injured officers, their families and our department during this time,” Pueblo Police Department Chief Chris Noeller said in a press release. “The outpouring of support serves as a reminder of the strong relationship between our department and the community we are proud to serve.”

The incident began around 11:09 p.m. on Saturday when police responded to a report of a home invasion in the 1600 block of Gaylord Avenue. According to officers, they were then advised that the suspect fled the area in a Dodge Ram.

Officers spotted the vehicle near Jones Avenue and Brimmer Avenue and started a pursuit, but the driver abandoned the truck on Regency Boulevard and ran into an apartment complex.

Medical personnel treated the suspect at the scene, where he was pronounced dead. No members of the public were injured during the incident.

According to police, they tracked the man to an upstairs apartment and knocked on the door while identifying themselves as law enforcement. When the suspect opened the door, gunfire broke out between the suspect and the officers.

The Pueblo County Coroner’s Office has identified the man killed as 36-year-old Luis Antonio Morales.

PPD says in accordance with department policy, the involved police officers and dispatchers have been placed on administrative leave.

PPD says the 10th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team is still investigating the incident, and no further details regarding the shooting will be released at this time.
