Price of fuel across Nigeria for govment filling station

Di claim by di Nigeria National petroleum Corporation (NNPC) say dem don reduce di pump price of petrol for dia fueling stations by 66 naira, no appear to be di reality on di ground.

Checks by BBC News Pidgin tori pipo for across di kontri show say, di petrol pump price for NNPC stations, dey slightly lower dan wetin oda petrol marketers dey sell, but di margin no reach 66 naira, and for some places, di price for oda stations dey even cheaper pass wetin NNPC stations dey sell.

Na on 8 October 2026 di Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for di Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, announce wetin govment describe as 'petrol price discount' for all NNPC stations.

Den di following day, Andy Odeh wey be di Chief Corporate Communications Officer for NNPC tok say di discount wey dem offer na 66 naira for evri one litre of fuel.

"We understand di strain on families and livelihoods, and dis discount na to provide direct relief to customers during dis difficult period," oga Odeh tok.

According to di NNPC and tok-tok pipo for di Nigeria govment, dis price discount suppose start on 1 October 2026, to mark di 66th anniversary of Nigeria Independence, but as at dis Monday, 12 October 2026, di price of petrol for some NNPC fueling stations for different parts of Nigeria, neva reflect dis discount.

Our tori pesin for Abuja check for three NNPC stations, one of dem na mega station, and di pump price for two of di stations na N1,370, while di big station close to di Abuja World Trade Centre, dey sell at N1,405.

Oda independent petrol marketers dey sell fuel at between N1,395 and N1,430.

Dis mean say for di NNPC stations wey dell at N1,370, di difference between dia price and di oda private stations na betwin 25 and 60 naira. While di one wey dey sell at N1,405 na just difference of betwin 5 and 25 naira, and di price dey higher dan wetin some private fueling stations dey sell.

One commercial cab driver, Chukwukere Obieche, wey follow BBC News Pidgin tok narrate say e neva feel any difference from di day govment make di announcement say dem go give petrol price discount till now.

"Di price na still di same tin, and even dey higher for some places, upon say sometimes sef you no know weda dia meter dey correct or not," oga Obieche tok.

He add say im no see how dis "so-called" discount fit bring down di cost of transportation for di kontri or reduce di rising cost of living as govment claim say e go do.

For Onitsha, Anambra State, some residents tell our tori pesin say NNPC dey sell petrol for betwin N1,350 and N1,380, while oda stations dey sell for N1,400.

Dis na difference of betwin 20 and 50 naira, but not up to di 66 naira wey NNPC announce.

One resident, Obi Francis tok say dis margin no dey significant enuf to make pipo to choose to dey buy fuel for NNPC fueling stations, bicos "you fit buy even 50 litres sef yet you no go save reach 2000 naira", e tok.

Similarly, for Kano State wey be di commercial epicentre for northern Nigeria, our tori pesin also visit three fueling stations for differents parts of di town, two of dem dey sell at N1,385 and one dey sell at N1,420.

Private petrol stations for Kano dey sell at bewtin 1,395 and 1, 420. Again, di margin no reach di 66 naira wey NNPC claim say dem give Nigerians as discount.

Dan Asabe Tamburawa from Kano tok say the N50 reduction too small.

"We see say dis N50 reduction wey the Federal Govment do for petrol price, honestly, e too small for us. Dem suppose bring petrol come down to N700 so evribodi fit benefit," Tamburawa tok.

E tok say di price discount wey govment announce don even cause argument betwin dem and passengers bicos passengers dey tell tok say dem suppose reduce dia price as e be say fuel price don fall.

For one of di NNPC fueling stations for Abuja, wey dey also sell Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), our tori pesin notice say long queue dey for cars wey wan buy CNG.

One of di drivers tok say e fit spend betwin four to six hours for di queue bifor e go reach im turn to refill im CNG cylinder, but wetin e dey lose for long hours on di queue, e dey gain am for profit from im work.

"As I spend too much time for line now, afta I refill (my cylinder) I go reach house, baff and chop, den I fit start work by 1pm and close around 10, but I go make at least 60 to 70 thousand (naira)," e tok.

"I fit buy 10k CNG or even 7k and na evriday I dey buy. But normal car now wey di driver start work since morning, e fit spend 50k to buy fuel, and e fit dey make maybe 90 or 100k if e close by 6 or 7PM."

"So even though e dey waste time to buy CNG, e dey veri veri cheaper. If na civil servant I be, dat 10k CNG fit last me for four to five days."

Di Nigeria govment, for dia announcent of petrol price discount on 8 October, also promise to make am easier for Nigerians to dey use CNG cars since e dey 60 to 70% cheaper dan petrol.
