So, one of the most anticipated matches in recent Premier League history ends in a big victory for Manchester City, in the club's first match since being found guilty of the majority of the 115 charges brought against them by the Premier League.

City maintain their innocence, and have launched appeal, and so the club's longer-term fate remains a complete unknown.

But, for now, they have another memorable victory to celebrate at the home of one of their fiercest rivals of recent times, and sit happily at the top of the Premier League table after a sixth straight league victory.

Enzo Maresca's side have been given their first taste of the strength of feeling which is set to be vocalised at every stadium they visit from here – and they have certainly passed the test.

The attitude coming into this game, all they could do was play their best. When you're in a dressing room and there's accusations flying around, the players will have wanted to go out there and put on a show.

The two yellows were soft but Jeremy Doku changed the game coming on.

They really delivered today against the noise and that was a perfect game against Liverpool.

Strange atmosphere at the end of the game. Very deserved and comprehensive win. They showed their quality. They moved the ball quickly. They got individuals in one-v-one situations and they caused Liverpool huge, huge problems.

Liverpool lost key players before the game and Man City's class told on the pitch and it was too much for Liverpool.

Manchester City winger Jeremy Doku speaking to BBC Sport: "Very happy, we know how tough it is to come here. From the start it was very intense – we're all happy to win the game.

"Coming to Anfield is always intense. I have always experienced intense games here, that's what we expected. Proud of my team, we dealt with it well."

On what Enzo Maresca said as he came on: "He just told me where I was going to play, when you're on the bench you're looking for a way to impact the game and I did that."

On goal: "I don't want to take credit for this, there's someone higher than me that is giving me the ability to do these things."

On whether City players have talked about what is happening off field: "I'm just here to talk about the game. We prepared well for the game, happy that we won."

More from Van Dijk, speaking to Sky Sports on the guilty verdict against Manchester City: "The only thing I can say, because it's ongoing, is that I have really enjoyed the rivalry.

"But that is on the pitch, what has happened off the pitch is a totally different story.

"Because it's still ongoing, it's not a good idea for me to comment on this.

"When it's properly settled I will definitely share my comments on it but for now let's wait and see."

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk speaking to Sky Sports: "First half was good from us. We showed our intensity, could've done better on occasions where we got on the break. They weren't massive chances but we showed we wanted to win and we had intensity which is the bare minimum.

"Second half the red card changed the game, especially when you concede quickly afterwards. We end up with 10 men is the fact and we concede quickly after and it becomes a difficult game against them again."

On the atmosphere: "I think the atmosphere is always good here, I've been fortunate to play in a lot of big games here. For other players maybe it was different but for me I was ready to compete and I think we showed that especially in the first half."

More from Maresca to BBC Sport, on how tough the outside noise has been for the players to deal with: "I don't know. The only thing I can say is that we need to learn to deal with the noise but the message is to win games.

"For me it's quite easy, I try to focus on things I can control. There are things that are not in my hands so I don't stress about them.

On Jeremy Doku, he jokes: "Good against Sunderland from the bench, good today from the bench, and will probably be on the bench again PSG just to do the same strategy. It's very good he's back."

And on Elliot Anderson: "Not surprised because we know how good he is and how good he can be. He has many things he can do better. He's a lovely guy and wants to learn."

Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca speaking to BBC Sport: "Very proud of the players because I know how tough it has been for them in the last two or three weeks with the noise. We struggled a bit first half. Not good enough on the ball but second half we were much better.

"We changed something second half because we were not good enough on the ball. We adjusted something and we deserved to win the game.

"Red card was a good for us, it changed the game. After two or three weeks with all the situation, our target is to deal with the noise and make our noise, to win games."

We should be able to praise the win without the thing in the back of your mind.

Ruben Dias, Gianluigi Donnarumma and Elliott Anderson were excellent.

More from Maresca to Sky Sports, on the importance of giving the fans something to celebrate: "Absolutely, for many reasons. After 10-15 years where the organisation is winning titles, doing the right things in terms of winning titles and then this happens it's not a good feeling for them.

"There is a process ongoing, this is not the moment."

On his team's goals: "Outstanding – Jeremy [Doku] was very good we need to take care of him. He is important but only just back from injury. Performance from everyone was brilliant.

"With one more player, it was easier to keep the ball but very happy with three points.

"I can not control things outside football so why stress? I stress about gameplan, day by day training sessions but the rest it's not in my hands."

330178Shareclose panelShare pageCopy linkAbout sharingManchester City

Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca speaking to Sky Sports: "Very difficult circumstances, difficult environment. We struggled first half, we were on the ball but not so much off the ball. Second half we made some adjustments and we were much better. In the build-up we were not doing the right things, second half we were better."

On the Anfield atmosphere: "We need to learn how to deal with the noise because the noise will be with us at all of our away games – there will be noise. We need to deal with that and make our noise. Our noise is to win games. The feeling at the end of the game with our fans and our noise, that's a nice feeling and a different noise."

More intense atmosphere than usual? "I don't know exactly, I came here with City once before in the Treble season. It was nice to play this kind of game for the noise, the environment. We need to make our noise and deal with their noise."

On whether the off-field issues can galvanise the team: "Probably yes, probably no. I don't know. It can create togetherness with the fans. I said during the week bring the passion, bring the noise and hopefully we can celebrate a win. This is the only thing we can focus on."

Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola, speaking to Sky Sports: "I think it's obvious. We've played two games today. One game until the 60th minute and then another game after the red card. We were the best team in the first game and then they were better.

On Ryan Gravenberch's red card: "The first one is not a yellow. Anderson carries on a couple of steps; he wasn't even going to give a foul. I've no idea why he gives a yellow card. We have like nine players behind the ball.

"It's already difficult to press them when it's 11 v 11, but with one less, it becomes a different game and then we concede straight away before making a substitution. You have to play differently when you're 1-0 down.

On Gravenberch: "He played really well today. He was carrying the ball very well and defending very well.

"I feel very proud of the players today. It was not easy. They have been at the level in terms of intensity and winning duels.

"The supporters today have been top-level. Exemplary from the beginning when we arrive. The red card was in our best moment. Even after, they valued the effort of the players.

On injured players returning: "They are not too big injuries but we travel to Austria in two days. It will be difficlt thwy are ready for the next one."

Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola, speaking to BBC MOTD: "I think the first part is that we played two different games. One until the red card, and then after. For 60 minutes, the players were very good. The second game from the red card was where City were better than us.

On Ryan Gravenberch's red card: "The first yellow card was just a kick in the toe. It was nothing. It was a normal foul.

"It was the moment when we were pushing more. The momentum was coming for us and the atmosphere in the stadium was so nice.

"We conceded very little in the first half. We did a really good job. The second half, we were translating into chances.

"You learn a lot in games like today. I am very proud of my players. They put the work rate and everything in today. It's a loss and we didn't get anything from the performance but I liked it a lot.

On injured players coming back for Champions League: "It'll be difficult because it's two days. You never know."

Manchester City midfielder Elliot Anderson speaking to Sky Sports: "Togetherness, fight, a tough place to come and we stuck together and fought for each other. We've showed courage."

Dealing with the atmosphere: "It was more than normal, arriving into Anfield and the first 10 minutes of the game. We did well to quieten the crowd. Struggled first half but second we were better and then the goals came."

On winning seven games at Anfield: "A good stat. It is tough, during the game you can feel it and it's a game you have to stick together more than ever.

"I just enjoy it. I enjoy the crowd, the noise, I thrive on it and that's when I come alive. It gives me confidence."

Highlights: Manchester City beat Liverpool to extend perfect start

Chief football writer at AnfieldManchester City's first game since being found guilty of breaching Premier League financial regulations ended in victory as they outclassed Liverpool at Anfield.

Enzo Maresca's side restored their three-point lead at the top of the table in emphatic fashion – but there remains the sense that this is a season in limbo as City await their punishment, with the potential for Premier League expulsion, relegation or record points deductions.

Liverpool fans made their feelings known before and during the game with constant "cheat" jibes, but City, who have appealed against the verdict of an independent commission, responded with a measured display before picking Liverpool apart, who had been reduced to 10 men when Ryan Gravenberch was sent off.

Erling Haaland broke the deadlock with a thunderous finish after 65 minutes, substitute Jeremy Doku adding the second with a stunning strike into the top corner three minutes later.

And City confirmed their vast superiority when Rayan Cherki produced brilliant individual skill to make it 3-0 12 minutes from time.

The game opened in a predictably fevered atmosphere as the Kop delivered taunts about the guilty verdict, unfurling banners emblazoned with messages such as 'A Generation Of Supporters Cheated', while City fans responded backing their owners by brandishing a flag reading 'In Khaldoon We Trust'.

Once the initial sound and fury died down, the first half was an anti-climax as City slowed the game to combat the hostile environment while Liverpool struggled to make a breakthrough.

The second half showed more signs of life, with City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma saving from Victor Munoz and Gravenberch in swift succession, while Haaland held his head in anguish after rolling a chance wide when clean through.

Gravenberch's dismissal, given a second yellow card for a foul on Doku, left Liverpool with an uphill task as City moved through the gears to win with ease.

Maresca calls on Man City squad to 'make their own noise' after Liverpool win

If Manchester City were feeling pressure from the storm raging around the club after being found guilty of those financial breaches, there was no sign of it in a commanding victory at Anfield.

City were not unnerved at any point, even when toxicity poured down from Anfield's stands in a predictably frantic opening phase.

Within minutes, City were playing with calm control that took the heat out of the atmosphere against a Liverpool side short of ideas and lacking the class and quality of their opponents.

Elliot Anderson was a powerhouse in midfield, while Donnarumma produced saves when required on the rare occasions Liverpool threatened.

And once Gravenberch was sent off, City were ruthless in making the most of their numerical advantage to seal what they will regard as a statement victory.

Haaland was not going to miss a second opportunity when he blazed a finish past Alisson, while Doku and Cherki scored goals of the highest class, to emphasise what coach Maresca, who was jubilant at the final whistle, has at his disposal.

And yet, for all this, there is still the question of what such wins will actually mean once City have been handed their punishment and the result of their appeal is known.

'I didn't like the refereeing' – Iraola unhappy with Gravenberch red

Liverpool's hopes of piling further misery on embattled Manchester City foundered on a lack of resources through injury – and a lack of quality from big-money players they hoped would step up.

Head coach Andoni Iraola suffered without those injured during the international break, with Alexander Isak, Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo all missing.

Despite the noisy support of Liverpool's fans fired up by Manchester City's presence, they could not sustain any momentum.

Spain winger Victor Munoz was a glowing exception, but Liverpool must expect far more from ÂŁ116m Florian Wirtz, as well as ÂŁ123m summer signing Bradley Barcola.

Wirtz, as he has done for most of his Liverpool career, looked lightweight and off the pace, an easy proposition for City in the physical challenges. It was no surprise when he was substituted after 66 minutes.

Barcola also failed to last the course after an afternoon spent losing possession and running up blind alleys. He may still be adjusting to the Premier League – but there is no such explanation for the bitterly disappointing Wirtz.
