A man has appeared in court after being charged with murder following the death of a woman in her 70s.

Emergency services were called to Sherbourne Avenue in Bradley Stoke on the outskirts of Bristol at about 14:00 BST on Friday.

A 71-year-old woman was found with serious injuries and pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Gerald Bishop, of Sherbourne Avenue, was later charged with her murder.

Appearing at Bristol Magistrates Court earlier, the 73-year-old was remanded into custody ahead of hearing at Bristol Crown Court on Tuesday.

Supt Karen Corrigan, of Avon and Somerset Police, said she understood the incident came as a "great shock to the community", but added: "We do not consider there to be any ongoing risk to the public."
