“One Disabled One Wheelchair” – Kevin Taylor Reacts To Mahama’s Wheelchair Import Plan
Ghanaian broadcaster and political commentator Kevin Taylor has reacted to President John Dramani Mahama’s announcement that government will import rechargeable wheelchairs for persons with disabilities.
He took to Facebook on October 12, 2026 to react to the news, taking a swipe at the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP). “NPP would have named this ONE DISABLED ONE WHEELCHAIR and promoted it as a policy or Social Intervention,” he wrote.
The comment appears to be a jibe at the NPP’s habit of branding its flagship programmes with catchy slogans, such as “One District One Factory” and “One Village One Dam.” In Taylor’s view, a measure of this kind would have been packaged and marketed as a major social intervention under the previous administration, whereas the current government has announced it plainly as part of its work.
The President’s announcement, reported by GHOne TV, also includes an increase in the share of the District Assemblies Common Fund allocated to persons with disabilities, from 3% to 5%. The adjustment is expected to give district assemblies more resources to support the welfare, mobility and empowerment of persons with disabilities across the country.
Rechargeable wheelchairs are widely regarded as a significant improvement for users, offering greater independence and mobility, especially for those who cannot propel manual chairs over long distances or uneven terrain.
Taylor’s post has reignited conversation about political branding in Ghana. Supporters of the government have praised what they describe as substance over slogans, while critics argue that what matters most is delivery, regardless of who makes the announcement or how it is packaged.
The announcement has also been welcomed by many Ghanaians online as a practical step towards inclusion. Disability advocates are expected to watch the implementation closely to ensure that the wheelchairs and the increased funding reach the intended beneficiaries.
