Obama rolls out ad for Dem Scott Colom in Mississippi Senate race

“Mississippi, it’s time for a change. That’s why you need to send Scott Colom to the U.S. Senate,” Obama said in the ad. “Scott is a devoted husband and dad, a seventh-generation Mississippian, guided by his Christian faith.”

“Scott made his community safer, prosecuting violent crimes as district attorney, fighting corruption in Columbus. Now he’s running for Senate to raise wages, lower costs, and save your healthcare and hospitals. Mississippi, your vote matters. Let’s get this done,” he continued.

Colom — a district attorney in Mississippi’s 16th District — is running to unseat incumbent Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R), who is running for a second full term in the upper chamber.

Colom was previously nominated twice by former President Biden to serve as U.S. district judge for the Northern District of Mississippi. His nomination was blocked by Hyde-Smith and Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) through the “blue slip” tradition.

The Magnolia State is traditionally a red state and has not elected a Democrat to the Senate since 1982, according to 270ToWin, though Republican candidates face a rocky midterm environment.

The Iran war has hit Mississippi especially hard as the prices of gas and fertilizer skyrocketed, partially because of the war.

The average per-gallon price of regular gas in Mississippi is $3.93 as of Monday afternoon, according to AAA, which is up $1.27 from prices a year ago. A gallon of diesel fuel currently costs an average of $5.87 per gallon, which is also up $2.62 from a year ago.

President Trump is currently on a midterm blitz in many red and purple states across the country — such as Texas, Oklahoma and Ohio — to help the GOP’s chances of retaining control of Congress.

Decision Desk HQ (DDHQ), a partner of The Hill, gives the Democratic Party a 56 percent chance of regaining control of the Senate. In the state, the DDHQ polling average gives Hyde-Smith a 93 percent chance of keeping her seat.
