NPP spent GH¢66m at the 2022 world cup group stage, we NDC spent GH¢55m, who is more prudent – Adams
According to report by Ghonetv on Monday 12, October 2026, Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has questioned the financial prudence of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration during Ghana’s participation in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, comparing its expenditure with the amount spent under the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
According to Adams, the NPP government spent approximately GH¢66 million on Ghana’s participation in the group stage of the 2022 World Cup, but the team failed to progress beyond that stage of the competition.
He contrasted the figure with an alleged expenditure of GH¢55 million under the NDC, arguing that Ghana achieved a better sporting outcome despite spending less.
Making the comparison, the Sports Minister posed a question about which administration demonstrated greater financial prudence, drawing attention to the relationship between public spending and performance on the football pitch.
“The NPP spent GH¢66 million at the 2022 World Cup group stage, we [NDC] spent GH¢55 million and advanced beyond it, so who was more prudent?” Adams asked.
Ghana’s Black Stars participated in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar but failed to qualify for the knockout stage after finishing third in Group H. The team recorded one victory and two defeats in its three group matches.
Adams’ comments have brought renewed attention to the management of public funds allocated to the national football team and the need for accountability in sports administration.
However, a comprehensive assessment of the two expenditure figures would require details of the respective budgets, the items covered, and the circumstances surrounding each tournament campaign.
His comparison adds to the broader debate about how Ghana can manage football-related expenditure effectively while improving the Black Stars’ performance at major international competitions.
