“Ndio Hawa”: Raila’s Death Takes a New Twist as Probe Reveals Who Fired Shots at His Farewell

A new BBC investigation has raised serious questions about the fatal shooting of mourners during the farewell ceremony of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga at Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi in October 2025.

The investigation, released on Monday, October 12, 2026, suggests that an elite police unit responsible for presidential protection may have fired some of the fatal shots that killed three mourners during the chaotic event.

According to the BBC Africa Eye report, the team analysed more than 1,500 photographs and videos to establish where the victims were standing when the shooting occurred.

The findings showed that the three victims were between 60 and 160 metres away from the confrontation near the VIP pavilion. Two of them were in opposite stands, far from the area where some mourners had clashed with police officers.

The victims were identified as Evans Kiche, a 40-year-old chef and father of seven, Vincent Ogutu, a father of three, and Jidah Burka.

The incident happened on October 16, 2025, when thousands of Kenyans gathered at Kasarani Stadium to pay their last respects to Raila, who had died in India the previous day.

Tensions rose after some mourners attempted to access the VIP section. Police officers responded with gunfire, causing panic among people inside the stadium.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen defended the police response, saying officers had acted under pressure after some members of the crowd began throwing objects. However, the BBC reported that its review found no evidence that stones were among the objects thrown.

The investigation identified several heavily armed officers whose uniforms and movements were consistent with presidential protection duties. However, it could not establish which officers fired the bullets that killed each victim.

Nearly a year later, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority is still investigating the deaths, and no one has been held accountable.

The findings have renewed questions about police conduct and the need for accountability when civilians lose their lives during public events.

Do you think the ongoing investigation will finally bring answers to the families of the three victims?
