Museveni: Today’s Banyankole Are Eating Pigs Like Never Before

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has sparked debate after making remarks about the changing eating habits of the Banyankole, claiming that people in the community are increasingly consuming pork.

Museveni reportedly observed that Banyankole of today are eating pigs thoroughly, a statement that has attracted attention given the community’s longstanding association with cattle keeping.

Traditionally, the Banyankole are known for their deep cultural attachment to cattle, particularly the famous long-horned Ankole cows, which have historically symbolised wealth, pride and social status.

However, pork has become increasingly popular across Uganda, with roadside pork joints and restaurants attracting customers and creating business opportunities for pig farmers and traders.

The President’s remarks highlight changing food preferences and lifestyles in western Uganda, although they do not mean that all Banyankole eat pork or that cattle have lost their cultural importance in the community
