According to a report by London Evening Standard on Monday October 12, 2026, Manchester United manager Michael Carrick faces a selection headache ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid, with Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo emerging as injury doubts.

Both players missed training on Monday after featuring in the 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur, leaving their availability for the trip to Spain uncertain.

United will travel to the Metropolitano Stadium hoping to secure a positive result and end their four-game winless run across all competitions. However, Carrick must resolve several fitness concerns before finalising his starting lineup for the crucial European encounter.

Shaw’s situation is particularly worrying after the left-back was substituted during stoppage time against Tottenham. The defender was later seen limping as he left Old Trafford, raising concerns about a possible injury setback.

Mainoo also missed Monday’s training session despite completing the full match against Spurs. Carrick is expected to provide further information about both players during his pre-match press conference.

If Shaw is unavailable, United could face difficulties at left-back because Patrick Dorgu and Noussair Mazraoui are also sidelined with injuries. Diogo Dalot could move across to the left, allowing the manager to maintain much of the defensive structure used at the weekend.

Alternatively, Lisandro Martinez could fill the position, while young defenders Ayden Heaven and Harry Amass remain possible options.
