Married 35 Years Ago Today, This Powerhouse Hollywood Duo Are True Partners In Every Way

Famed director Steven Spielberg and actor Kate Capshaw tied the knot in 1991. Since then, their partnership has guided them through an impressive 35 years of marriage.
With a relationship like that, fans have long wondered what makes their marriage so successful. Yet, there’s one suspicious detail about Spielberg’s marriage to Capshaw that many find hard to ignore. The timeline of their marriage and Spielberg’s first marriage is a bit atypical. Spielberg met Capshaw when she joined the cast of his movie “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” in 1983. At the time, he’d been dating actor Amy Irving since 1976. Spielberg and Irving tied the knot in 1985, had their son Max, and then split in 1989. That same year, Spielberg and Capshaw moved in together.
While the unusual timeline gives some folks pause, Spielberg and Capshaw have been growing strong ever since. And how Spielberg’s ex-wife feels about him helps, too: they seemed to end on good terms. Evidently, despite a complicated beginning and a Hollywood marriage, Spielberg and Capshaw are clearly a perfect match.
Michael Kovac/Getty Images Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw’s bond seemingly influences all corners of their lives. For starters, they have a lot more kids than you likely realized. Within the first two years of dating, the couple had daughter Sasha and adopted their son Theo. Then, they got married in 1991 before having their son Sawyer and daughter Destry and adopting daughter Mikaela, in addition to Spielberg’s son from his previous marriage and Capshaw’s daughter from her own. “[Capshaw] has made such a life for me, and we brought seven kids into the world, two of them adopted. We now have six grandchildren. And that is the real stuff,” Spielberg explained at the 2026 SXSW Conference and Festival, per People.
Yet, parenting is far from the only area where they’re a team. Capshaw has helped Spielberg make career choices on many occasions, too. In 1995, she explained to The Spokesman-Review, “Steven and I are partners, and our life together is our production, so to speak. If I want to do something that affects that production, I want to have his support. If he doesn’t understand the piece, then I have to help explain it.” According to her, “He operates his jet — a camera and a story. My jet is the family,” noting, “I get to be the frontierswoman here, and he gets to be the frontiersman there.” Evidently, this special system has been working for decades since then.
