Manchester United Suffer Double Injury Scare Ahead of Atletico Madrid Champions League Clash

According to a report by London Evening Standard on Monday October 12, 2026, Manchester United have suffered a potential double injury setback after Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo were missing from training ahead of their Champions League meeting with Atletico Madrid.

Michael Carrick’s side travel to the Metropolitano seeking to end a four-match winless streak across all competitions. Their preparations have been complicated by fresh concerns surrounding two important first-team players.

Shaw started United’s 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur but was substituted during stoppage time, with Ayden Heaven replacing the left-back shortly before the final whistle.

Although Carrick offered no immediate explanation for the substitution, footage circulating online showed Shaw limping as he left Old Trafford, raising concerns about his fitness for the upcoming European fixture.

The defender previously missed United’s Champions League victory over Sabah because of injury. His absence from training has therefore increased uncertainty over whether he will be available against Atletico Madrid.

United could face additional difficulties at left-back if Shaw is ruled out. Patrick Dorgu and Noussair Mazraoui are also recovering from injuries sustained during the international break, limiting Carrick’s defensive options.

Mainoo’s absence has created another concern for the Manchester club. The midfielder completed the entire match against Tottenham but failed to participate in the latest training session, making his involvement in Madrid doubtful.

However, United received encouraging news regarding Matthijs de Ligt, who participated in training and could potentially return after his recent spell on the sidelines.

Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Leny Yoro and Diogo Dalot also trained ahead of the Champions League encounter, providing Carrick with several defensive options as preparations continue.

Carrick is expected to clarify the situations involving Shaw and Mainoo during his press conference, where he will provide a further update on United’s squad availability before the Atletico Madrid fixture.

With United struggling for consistent results, the possible absence of two important players would represent another challenge as Carrick attempts to revive the team’s performances and secure a much-needed European victory.
