Long queues persist at Lahore vehicle fitness centres despite deadline extension
LAHORE – Long queues of vehicles continued to be witnessed at vehicle fitness centres across Lahore, even on a holiday, as motorists rushed to obtain green fitness stickers despite a one-month extension in the deadline. The rush at the Punjab Waste Management and Environmental X (PWX) centres showed no signs of easing with vehicle owners turning up for emission testing and fitness certificates. The testing process was underway at 12 centres established across the city, including the PWX centre in Township. According to officials, emission testing has been made mandatory for private vehicles to control smog. Vehicle owners were required to obtain fitness stickers and certificates from the designated centres. The authorities have warned that action will be taken against vehicles failing to meet fitness standards from November 15. Violators may also face a fine of Rs2,000. The fitness stickers, equipped with QR codes will remain valid for one year. Under the prescribed rules, motor cars with engine capacities of up to 1,000cc will be exempt from the requirement for five years from their date of manufacture.
