An 18-year-old man died after he was allegedly beaten by community members who accused him of attempting to rob a foreign-owned shop in Rostock village, Limpopo, on Sunday evening.

Limpopo police spokesperson Col Malesela Ledwaba said officers on patrol were alerted by a local hospital about a man who had been assaulted and died on arrival at the medical facility.

According to police, the victim’s family received information that he had attempted to rob the shop. Community members allegedly mobilised and attacked him with sticks, stones and cables.

His family managed to retrieve him from the scene while he was still breathing and rushed him to hospital, where he died on arrival.

Mecklenburg police have opened a murder case and launched a manhunt for the suspects, who have yet to be identified.

Limpopo provincial commissioner Lt-Gen Jan Scheepers condemned the attack and urged community members not to take the law into their own hands.
